Wireless Security Cameras

Home and business security has moved a step ahead in terms of surveillance cameras. Wireless security cameras are CCTV (closed-circuit television) cameras that send audio and video signal to a wireless receiver mostly through a radio band. The cameras require at least one cable for power, thus the term “wireless” refers to the transmission of audio or video data. However, some cameras are battery powered making them totally wireless. In this article, the author will focus on the types and applications of wireless security cameras. 



Wireless security cameras are becoming very popular among modern security customers due to their low costs in installation (there is no high demand for running video extension cables) and flexible mounting options. There are two different types of wireless security cameras: Digital wireless cameras and analog wireless.

Analog Wireless

Analog wireless is the transmission of video and audio signals using radio frequencies. Normally, an analog wireless transmits data around the range of 91 meters in open spaces. Doors, furniture, and walls will reduce this range. Analog wireless is found in three frequencies but a majority of wireless security cameras operate on 2.4 GHz frequency. Household routers, video game controllers, microwaves, and cordless phones operate on this same frequency. This may bring interference with your wireless security camera.

There are several advantages that come with analog wireless.
  • It is cost effective since the cost of an individual camera is low.
  • A signal from a camera has multiple receivers. The signal from one camera can be received by any receiver. You can place several receivers in various locations so as to generate a wireless surveillance network.
  • Here are some of the disadvantages:
  • It has no strength indicator. There is no any visual alert indicating the signal strength.
  • One-way communication. The receiver will receive data from the camera but the receiver cannot send the signals back to the camera.
  • Interference from household devices such as video game controller, microwave, and cordless phones. 

Digital Wireless Cameras

Everything nowadays is going digital including the cameras. Digital wireless is the transmission of video and audio analog signals encoded as digital packs over high bandwidth radio frequencies. The digital wireless camera has several advantages:
  • A wide transmission range. It is commonly observed on open space between the receiver and the camera.
  • High-quality audio and video.
  • Functions and commands, such as playing music can be transmitted.
  • Multiple receivers can be connected to one recording device.

Uses and applications

Wireless security cameras are becoming the talk of the town in the consumer market since it is an effective way of having a comprehensive surveillance system installed for a less expensive price. The security cameras are ideal for people renting apartments since there is no need to run extension cables through ceilings or walls. Additionally, lack of wiring avoids damage looks on a building.

Barn Cameras
Wireless signals can be transmitted from one building point to another in places where it is not possible to run wires due to obstacles. A common use of these is watching a barn with animals.

Law Enforcement
Wireless security cameras are used by law enforcement agencies. They use these cameras to deter crimes.  The cameras can be installed in many locations and data transmitted through government wireless network.

Wireless security cameras work best when in an open clear line of sight between the receiver and the camera.
